Russell wouldn't exactly claim to be undercover at the moment, mostly because his boss hadn't sent him out and he's absolutely certain what he's doing right now is entirely without any sort of official police approval, but he's heard some whispers lately. Reid's been doing a lot of work on his own, taking his gigantic boyfriend out when he probably shouldn't be, but he's kept Russell in the loop and now Russell thinks it might be time to return the favour. He got a tip that some of the vampires Reid is looking for are meeting tonight and all Russell wants to do is get a good look at them and relay the information back.
So he's not strictly undercover, but as soon as he enters the bar, he realizes he looks pretty goddamn conspicuous on his own. He could be meeting a friend, but if no friend ever shows up, then that isn't going to help him blend in and so, as he slides into a booth, Russell draws out his phone and texts Ray.
The guy is nice, he seems like a good cop and Russell had sort of gotten the sense he wanted to be friends, so the text message he sends explains it all. He's hanging out in a bar, he's watching some folks and needs a better cover, he texts Ray the address and then waits. Somewhere along the way, the waitress brings him a glass of water and asks if he wants anything to drink, but Russell just asks for two menus and says he's waiting for a friend. He'll have a beer tonight, but just one because he wants to keep sharp, and so he wants to wait until Ray can join him for that.
For now, though, the two menus makes him look a little less like he's just hanging out alone and watching, which helps. The guys (vampires maybe, he's not sure) are a couple tables over and they're not exactly quiet.

He's not waiting around.
But he makes it to the bar in ten minutes flat, jacket covering up the additions he's been making to his shoulder holster that he's kinda been hoping he could show Russell. Kinda really hoping he could show him and maybe also shoot the shit and hang out.
"Hey," he murmurs, unable to keep a little pleased smile off his face as he tries hard to keep cool. He slides in across from him, doing a scan of the place on reflex, carefully not letting his eyes settle on the creeps a few tables over. "What's the deal, here? Couple tables over, right?"

Unless vampires have super hearing. Russell realizes he's never asked about that and he's suddenly regretting it.
He keeps the grin on his face as he nods in response to Ray's question. "Yeah, couple of bloodsuckers. I just need to make sure they are who I've been told they are and then get a real good look at 'em so I can bring the description back to the guy who's working the case. Should be pretty simple, right?" He's not sure how they're going to find out for sure if they're vampires short of checking their pulses, but he figures they'll come up with something.

He leans back, sprawling out as he takes his menu, making sure this looks like a buddy meeting another buddy, nothing more.
"These the same ones? Ones who're takin' the prostitutes? Or this another...nest or gang or whatever you call 'em.?"

He doesn't know all the details, but he knows that Reid needs this information. He needs to know what these vampires are doing and what they look like and if Russell can bring that to him, he'll be happy to do it.
"Reid needs some physical descriptions," he says. "I'm hopin' we can get that and maybe a little information about what they're plannin' right now."

But Ray has a point. From this distance, he can't really hear what's going on, but there is a pool table near the table where the vampires are sitting. Russell nods toward it and asks, "You play?" It'll give them a better vantage point to hear and see what's going on at the table without looking too much like they're trying to do exactly that.

"C'mon, I play well enough to hustle. Pretty sure it's a requirement for all undercover, you know. Gotta smoke, gotta drink and gotta play pool. Not surprisingly I get typecast."

His parents would have killed him if he'd started smoking and in a small town there's no way to hide something like that. Drinking, though, that was pretty much a city-wide event.
"C'mon, rack 'em up," he says once they've ordered their drinks. "We can go from there."

He strikes, eyes cutting over to the vamps as they raise their heads at the noise, peripherally aware of a few balls sinking as he straightens up. "Probably a good thing I didn't actually bet you any money on this. Mountie babysitting doesn't leave a lot of time for pool playing. I'm guessing being a family man comes with the same side effect?"
no subject
They'll have to stick around a little while longer, which isn't exactly a hardship.
"Used to, though," he admits. "I guess that might just be a... y'know, cop thing." He lowers his voice a little when he says that, not wanting anyone to overhear.

"I was doing way better before I got scooped up by this place. City fit and Canada fit and dog sleds and a whole host of crazy. Was gonna take a break from the job, actually. Seems crazy, now."

There's a name dropped at the next table, a Kingsley, and Russell makes note of it to bring back to Reid later. Maybe he isn't getting much, but bits and pieces are still better than absolutely nothing and he hopes they can uncover at least a few things that might be helpful in the long run. These guys need to be put in their place.
"How come you were lookin' to take a break?" he asks.
